Charles GREEN

Biographie

Charles Green is Professor of Contemporary Art in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Author of Peripheral Vision (Craftsman House, 1996) and The Third Hand (U Minnesota Press, 2001), he recently published a history of biennials in contemporary art,Biennials, Triennials and Documenta: The Exhibitions that Created Contemporary Art (Wiley Blackwell, 2016),which he co-authored with Associate Professor Anthony Gardner (Oxford University), assisted by an Australian Research Council Discovery Grant. He also has expertise as a curator of contemporary art (through a five-year, 2001-2006 appointment as Adjunct Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Victoria, and has researched and published in the emerging area of contemporary art curatorship with the assistance of an ARC Discovery grant. Since 1989 he has worked in collaboration as one artist with Lyndell Brown and in 2007, they were Australia’s Official War Artists, deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. The following years of research and work culminated in the 2014 book Framing Conflict: Contemporary War and Aftermath Macmillan Palgrave) co-authored by Lyndell Brown and Jon Cattapan; this area of research has been supported by two Australia Research Council Discovery Grants and an Australian Research Council Linkage Grant. Green has also served on several national arts organization committees, including the Commissioner’s Council for Australia at the Biennale of Venice (2011-17), for which he was also Deputy Commissioner between 2013-2015.
